The relationship between ABC and St Margaret's began in 2024 - and the fundraising and the planning for this library took 12 months to come to life. Head Teacher Anna Sullivan had worked with ABC at her previous school Holy Family in Kidbrooke. She was well aware of the work the charity does and really wanted a space that her school's family community could share a love of reading in together.
Lucky recipients of the Literacy Trust's Libraries for Primaries project, St Margaret's had received 500 lovely brand new books from the programme plus some teacher training. However, they really needed a disused room in the school turned into somewhere the children could call a library and visit - that was more than just a room with some books in.
The school had decided on an Island Oasis beach theme library, so ABC got to work designing walls and installing 3 bespoke hand crafted beach huts created by Dave Blacker at Olivbells, a trusted ABC project partner.
In true community spirit, ABC had volunteers from Global Insurance company Inigo who helped build the bookcases, a Social Value donation from local construction company Keegans, and a significant project donation from Variety Golf who partnered with ABC to provide the school with this fabulous space.
The result was a spectacular oasis of books and calm, with plenty of cushions to relax on, fabulous books to read, snug nooks to curl up in and beautiful artwork to inspire young minds and the children wasted no time in making themselves comfortable with a book.
